On October 24, 2010, four Rotary districts adjacent to the bay will light up the San Francisco Ferry Building with the Rotary Wheel and End Polio Now logo.

Sunday October 24 marks a historic day for Rotary International: The beginning of the end of polio.

Rotary International club members worldwide have been active in letting the world know about their ongoing quest to eradicate the disease by illuminating such world icons as the Coliseum in Rome, the Pyramids of Egypt, and the Parliament building in London. Now the members of Districts 5130, 5150, 5160 and 5170 will show the bay area and beyond, the seriousness of their efforts.

Rotarian Polio Walk Sunday Event Schedule

From noon to 2:00 pm, Rotarians, friends and family will gather at Pier 39 to demonstrate their resolve by walking 1.5 miles on the beautiful San Francisco waterfront, led by Rotary International President Ray Klinginsmith at noon. Wearing Rotary shirts and caps, they’ll walk arm-in-arm to prove to the world that Rotarians can accomplish anything they set their minds to.

Ferry Building Retailers Provide Hospitality to Rotarians

The leisurely stroll on the beautiful San Francisco waterfront ends at the Ferry Building, where the group will shop, dine and celebrate until that evening’s historical moment. Ferry Building merchants anxiously await the Rotarians to show their support for Rotary’s pledge to close the gap and End Polio Now.

VIP Reception Held in Grand Hall

A reception from 5:00 7:00 pm will be hosted by president Klinginsmith and the four area district governors, and also attended by Rotarian club members and state civic leaders.

Laser Lights to Illuminate the Ferry Building Tower

Shortly after sunset, from 7:00 - 7:30 pm, bay area Rotarians will make history when Rotary International president Ray Klinginsmith and area District Governors throw the switch to illuminate the Ferry Building Clock Tower.

District 5170 Newsletter

In the October issue of the District 5170 newsletter, Ginger Taylor McDonald of Rotary Zone 26, Regional Coordinator - Public Image Resource Group, is praised for her work on this historical event in this way.

“There are no words available to describe the work and dedication of Ginger Taylor McDonald, and there certainly isn’t enough space to list all of the meetings, telephone calls, emails and sleepless nights she has experienced. Ginger has been a one-person show when it comes to putting together the Historic World Polio Day. Dealing with all the various governmental entities alone will qualify her for Sainthood. Thank you Ginger, for a job well done!”

Numerous club members will travel on South Bay tour buses for Rotary’s Pledge to End Polio Now, a once-in-a-lifetime event.
